A good distribution of the furniture and appliances in a kitchen is essential to make it practical and durable. This type of distribution creates an enveloping environment that allows us to make the most of the space and efficiently organise the different work areas.
And as we told you in our article "Discover the perfect layout for your kitchen" the u-shaped layout is one of the most popular due to its functionality.
but be careful! This layout is not recommended for all kitchens, and there are a few things to bear in mind.
So, although our distributors will advise you on everything you need, here are some tips to plan your new kitchen well.
1. Analyse the available space
The first step in designing a U-shaped kitchen is to assess the size and shape of the room. This type of layout works best in medium to large spaces, as it allows for a good flow of movement between work areas.
What is really important is that there is at least a 1.2 metre distance between the long sides of the u-shape to ensure that all the units can open wide and your comfort when cooking and moving around.
In terms of shape, it is ideal for square spaces, although it also works well in rectangular spaces, especially semi-open ones, as in this project by our distributor Sistema Cuina.

2. Keep in mind the work triangle rule
The work triangle connects the three key points of any kitchen: the cooking area, the water area (with the sink and, if necessary, the dishwasher) and the storage area, including the refrigerator.
In a U-shaped kitchen, this layout is created almost naturally and allows for a good work flow. Make sure that these elements are positioned in such a way that you can easily move between them without interruption.
Because of the current trend of placing the oven and microwave in a column, it is very common to find them in the one where the refrigerator is placed:
3. Optimise storage and don't forget the corners!
One of the great advantages of U-shaped kitchens is the amount of storage they offer. If you can, make the most of every wall to include upper and lower units or even floor-to-ceiling units.
In our catalogue you will find different accessories so that you don't lose a single centimetre (and reach everything comfortably); including the inside of corner units, which are often forgotten about. Our pull-out tray systems will be great for your new kitchen.
4. Choose the right materials and colours
If your kitchen is not large in size, the U-shaped design can make a small kitchen appear more compact, so the choice of colours can be crucial. In these cases, it's best to go for light or neutral tones to give a feeling of spaciousness; or even include some tall units without doors or glass cabinets.
But if size is not an issue... your imagination is the limit! Especially if it is open to the dining room or living room.
For example, this kitchen designed by our distributor JP Kitchen Concept:

5. go for a bar on the peninsula!
If your U-shaped kitchen is open concept (regardless of its size), a bar can be your greatest ally. This element will not only function as an excellent breakfast or informal dining area, but will also help you create a natural transition to the other spaces.
One last tip: make sure you leave enough space for chairs or stools, keeping at least 30 cm deep for comfort.
That's how well the idea worked for Expocuina Girona in this project.
