Contemporary kitchen design has moved beyond the phase where functionality and aesthetics competed for the leading role. Today, interior architecture seeks to create livable, expressive spaces structured with precision. In this new installment of our “In Depth” section, we analyze a project by Sistema Cuina, one of our distributors in Barcelona.
In this proposal, the Barcelona-based studio demonstrates how a thoughtful selection of materials and intelligent spatial planning transform a work space into the authentic heart of the home. Even when it initially appears to be a “small” kitchen. Let’s take a look.
The Power of the Palette: Clay Green and Oak
The first element that defines this project’s personality is its well-chosen chromatic and material approach. Far from the conventional neutrality of white (so common in small and medium kitchens), Sistema Cuina has chosen to create a deep, enveloping atmosphere using a contrasting combination.
For the main storage block that runs in an L-shape along all the kitchen walls, the studio has selected our Gandía model in clay green, one of the most popular tones lately for its ability to convey balance and serenity.
The distinctive feature of the Gandía model is that it comes in different sub-models. For this project, it has been used in its basic version and in its J-profile version with its integrated finger pull, manufactured directly from a recess in the same front panel. This technical solution eliminates the need for added handles, achieving clean, continuous lines with great visual clarity.
As a warm counterpoint, it has been combined with the Amazonas model, our laminate with an oak wood effect. Applied strategically in key areas, such as the peninsula or the breakfast nook, it introduces the organic texture of natural grain; achieving a balanced visual dialogue between urban modernity and ambient warmth.
Intelligent Planning: Verticality and Functional Peninsula
In terms of layout, the project masterfully resolves the use of floor space and flow of movement. The design strategy relies on two key elements:
- Floor-to-ceiling tall cabinets: The fronts have been designed vertically to create a sense of continuity. This solution not only maximizes storage capacity, but also eliminates useless upper gaps, offering a uniform architectural appearance that streamlines the space.
- Structural peninsula: Instead of forcing a freestanding island, the Sistema Cuina team opted for the installation of a peninsula. This piece extends a large work surface and defines the kitchen area from the rest of the home without closing off the space, and simultaneously functions as a food preparation zone and as an informal bar for everyday use.
The Breakfast Nook: Details That Make Daily Life Easy
One of the great successes of this project is the inclusion of an integrated breakfast nook within the tall cabinet composition. This open unit creates a specific technical space for small appliances and other utensils that need to be within reach.
By using the Amazonas model with integrated lighting as the structure, it breaks the monotony of the green front. This feature also adds three-dimensionality and demonstrates how personalized planning can turn a daily routine into a pleasant gesture.
Combination of Materials: Texture, Flooring, and Structure
But a great interior design project is not measured solely by its cabinets, but by how they dialogue with the existing architecture. Sistema Cuina has precisely coordinated each element to create a coherent context:
- The countertop and wall covering: For the countertop, a light, smooth surface has been selected that unifies the work area, and for the backsplash, texture and dynamism have been added with those artisan-style tiles.
- The structural beam: Respecting the structural beam and leaving it integrated into the visual composition adds an industrial and honest character. Rather than hiding it, this architectural element converses directly with the warmth of the Amazonas model and the freshness of the Gandía in clay green.
- The flooring, for its part, provides the necessary neutral base to support the chromatic weight of the cabinetry without overwhelming the whole.

The harmony between the clay green, the warmth of the oak finish, and the intelligent peninsula layout demonstrate that when design is approached from functionality and aesthetic coherence, the result is a kitchen full of character and completely timeless.
