However, the evolution of interior architecture has turned them into key pieces of contemporary design. Today, a bar is no longer a simple add-on: it’s a layout tool that can shape the space, encourage togetherness, and solve complex transitions between areas.

But before getting carried away by the flawless aesthetics of interior-design magazines, it’s worth looking at the reality of our home: does a breakfast bar really fit in your kitchen? Which one is best for your layout and your day-to-day life at home?

We look at the design criteria that make it possible to integrate this feature successfully, and the strategic approach its planning requires.

Available space: proportions and ergonomics

The first question to ask isn’t what material we want for the bar, but how much real space we have to ensure smooth circulation. Smart design aims to avoid a cramped, cluttered feel, so forcing a bar into a narrow room ends up turning it into an obstacle.

So, keep a few things in mind:

For comfortable movement, the minimum distance between the bar and any other furniture or wall should be around 90–100 cm. If the bar includes stools, allow enough room to pull them out and sit comfortably without blocking the walkway.

Depth and overhang: A bar designed for eating needs a minimum depth of 30–40 cm. When the bar is part of a peninsula or island, it’s essential to calculate the countertop “overhang” so there’s comfortable legroom.

The right height: Not all bars serve the same purpose. Cantilevered bars at countertop height (around 90 cm from the floor) are very convenient for food prep and require mid-height stools. By contrast, raised bars (around 105–110 cm) help visually hide the work area and sink from the living room, although they require tall stools.

From looks to practical use

The options for designing and adding a bar are as varied as kitchens themselves, but let’s look at a few solutions based on the existing architecture.

Nivel2 Muebles

Cantilevered bars on an island or peninsula

This is the most popular option in open-plan projects. Extending the countertop of an island or peninsula creates a continuous, very clean transition. This way, you can combine work zones with an informal dining area in the same space.

Mobles Zamora

Freestanding or waterfall bars

When space allows, bars with a side panel that runs all the way down to the floor (waterfall effect) act as true architectural elements. Their freestanding volume with a light framework helps structure the space without sacrificing even a hint of natural light or visual clarity.

Cuines Teixidor

Solutions for narrow kitchens or structural elements

What if the kitchen is long and narrow or has intermediate pillars? Instead of seeing columns, walls, or half-walls as a drawback, interior architecture uses them as anchor points. The bar can rest directly on one of these structures, creating an efficient support surface full of character.

Apal

Likewise, integrating a cantilevered bar along a large window or wall makes it possible to use corners and recesses, turning dead areas into perfect everyday spaces.

VMV Arquitectura

Materials and textures: finding the right balance

A bar shouldn’t be seen in isolation, but as part of the material palette of the whole home. And since it’s exposed to direct, continuous contact, the choice of finishes is key to its visual and physical durability.

Oak or walnut woods (or high-quality laminates that mimic their grain) are the go-to way to break up the coldness of monochrome or clean-lined kitchens.

If the kitchen is mainly white, grey, or blue, adding the warmth of wood on the bar balances the space’s colour temperature.

Meanwhile, using the same porcelain or engineered stone across the entire surface creates a calm, understated look—ideal for minimalist projects.

Does a breakfast bar really fit in your kitchen?
