5 rules to keep your kitchen in order

The kitchen isn’t just the room where we tend to spend the most time (or pass through most often each day); it’s also where we tend to do the most different activities. And, as you know, “more activities” usually means more mess and, above all, a greater tendency towards chaos.

That’s why, in this article, we’re going to tell you the 5 rules for keeping your kitchen tidy so you can continue enjoying your favorite space without having to live through a kitchen nightmare.

Don’t accumulate

The first rule is self-evident and can be applied to any room in our house: don’t accumulate.

The passage of time, impulsive purchases, or the gifts we receive can cause our kitchen cabinets and drawers to become unusable. Nobody is immune to this, especially those who love cooking and all the gadgets imaginable.

Our advice is that if you can’t avoid accumulating, do regular cleanups. In the article Hello, New Year; Goodbye, Old Junk! We’ll give you the keys to doing it.

Clear Countertops

A kitchen shouldn’t just be tidy, it should look tidy. A sense of order is essential for clearing your mind and getting rid of stress in the kitchen. So, start with what you see and… clear your countertops!

Get rid of all those small appliances you don’t really use every day or that could have a much more functional place. This is the case with electric coffee makers and toasters, which can be stored in a breakfast bar with retractable doors (you see it now, you don’t).

Do you have kitchen utensils or spices on the countertop for easy access? Opt for vertical storage instead and include specific accessories for storing them on the countertop.

A Well-Organized Pantry

Pantry cabinets, where we store food, are often the easiest places to get dirty and disorganized: open packages and boxes, mismatched shapes that don’t fit together (especially as we use them up), food scraps at the bottom of drawers… even if you’re not much of a cook, you’ll know what we mean.

To solve this, we suggest two ideas. First, use specific storage accessories for each type of food, such as spice racks, wine racks, or even shelves for coffee capsules; or drawer dividers to prevent different foods from getting mixed up.

Second, get some special jars and/or containers for storing food; especially for items like legumes or flour, which are often sold in loose paper or plastic packaging and tend to spill. This way, you’ll also keep your food fresher for longer (and prevent potential insect infestations). It is also useful for foods that come in small doses or formats, such as tea bags.

A place for everything and everything in its place

With the daily hustle and bustle, we sometimes don’t stop to think things through, but it’s essential for making the time we spend in the kitchen efficient and productive. Asking ourselves questions like “Where should the pans be stored?” or “What’s the most logical place to put the dishes?” is fundamental for easily creating and maintaining order.

Only then can you make good use of the space according to your needs and give everything a place. You can also plan what type of furniture or accessories will be best for you.

Use and put away

The last rule comes from those who, for one reason or another, spent a lot of time in the kitchen: our grandmothers. The key is very simple: clean and put away everything you use.

This way, the space and work surfaces will always be ready to make #MoreLifeInTheKitchen.
