The kitchen is not only the room we spend the most time in (or at least the most times per day), it's also where we often do the most different activities. And more activities usually means more dirt and more chaos.

That is why we are going to share 5 rules to keep your kitchen in order so you can enjoy your favourite space without fear of the mess.

    Don’t let things pile up

The first rule goes without saying and can be applied to any room in your house: don’t let things pile up.

Over time, we accumulate compulsive buys and gifts, making our kitchen cupboards and drawers impracticable. Nobody ever clears out these things, especially kitchen and gadget lovers.

We suggest that if you can't avoid accumulating, have regular clear-outs. We will guide you through it with our article Hello, New Year; bye-bye old junk!

    Clear countertops

A kitchen doesn’t need to just be organised; it needs to look it too. A sense of order is essential to freeing the mind and getting rid of stress in the kitchen. Start with what you can see and clear your countertops!

Remove all those small appliances that you aren’t really using every day or that could be stored in a more useful place. Electric coffee machines and toasters could be stored in a breakfast bar with retractable doors (now you see it, now you don’t).

Do you have kitchen utensils or spices on the countertop for easy access? You should opt for a vertical storage solution to set on the counter with specific accessories to organise them.

    A well-organised pantry

Pantry cupboards where we store our food are often the ones that get most easily dirty and messy, with open packets and boxes, different shapes and sizes that don’t fit together (particularly as you use them), leftover food at the bottom of drawers... Even if you’re not much of a cook, you know what we mean.

We have two ideas to help you fix this. Use storage solutions specific to each type of food, such as spice racks, bottle racks or even racks for coffee capsules, separators for inside drawers to stop different foods from moving around.

Use special boxes and/or containers to store food, particularly things like beans or flour that are often sold in flimsy paper or plastic packets and tend to spill out. This way you can keep the food in better condition and for a longer time (and avoid any potential insect infestations). They are also useful for foods that come in small quantities or formats, like teabags.

A place for everything and everything in its place.

With the hustle and bustle of everyday life, sometimes we don’t stop to think about things, but this is essential to making our time in the kitchen efficient and productive. Asking ourselves questions such as “Where should the frying pans be stored?” or “Where is the best place to put the plates?” is fundamental to easily creating and maintaining order.

It’s the only way you can make the most of your space based on your needs and have a place for everything. It will also help you decide what kind of furniture and accessories would be most suitable for you.

    Put away after use

The last rule is endorsed by people who spend lots of time in the kitchen, for one reason or another: our grannies. It’s simple, you just have to clean and tidy up as you go along.

This way, the work space and surfaces are always ready for #MoreTimeInTheKitchen.
